1. The Three-Strand Braid (The Plait):

The Technique: Divide hair into three equal sections. Cross the right section over the middle section (it becomes the new middle). Then, cross the left section over the new middle section. Repeat, alternating sides.

Pro Tip: Maintain even tension throughout. The key to a neat plait is consistent pressure with your fingers.

2. The French Braid (The Inverted Plait):

This is the foundation for almost every advanced updo.

The Technique: Start with a three-strand braid at the crown of the head. As you braid, gradually incorporate small sections of hair from the side into the strands before you cross them over.
