Braiding Like a Pro: From Simple Three-Strands to Intricate Festival Looks
Tweet
Braids are more than just a hairstyle; they are a timeless art form. They can be elegantly simple for a day at the office, bohemian and romantic for a weekend market, or wildly intricate for a music festival. But for many aspiring stylists, braiding can feel intimidating. How do you transition from a basic plait to those breathtaking, look-at-me styles you see on social media?
The secret, as we teach at the Midiff Institute of Professional Studies, is understanding that every complex braid is built upon a foundation of core techniques. It’s a journey of patience, practice, and knowing the right steps. Let's break down that journey.
Step 1: Mastering the Foundation – The "Big Three"
You must walk before you can run. Before attempting a fishtail crown, you need absolute confidence in these three fundamental braids. Practice these on a mannequin until your hands can do them without thinking.
1. The Three-Strand Braid (The Plait):
This is the universal starting point.
The Technique: Divide hair into three equal sections. Cross the right section over the middle section (it becomes the new middle). Then, cross the left section over the new middle section. Repeat, alternating sides.

Pro Tip: Maintain even tension throughout. The key to a neat plait is consistent pressure with your fingers.
2. The French Braid (The Inverted Plait):
This is the foundation for almost every advanced updo.
The Technique: Start with a three-strand braid at the crown of the head. As you braid, gradually incorporate small sections of hair from the side into the strands before you cross them over.
Pro Tip: Keep your sections clean and even. Use a tail comb for precise partings. The braid should follow a straight line down the head for a classic look.
3. The Dutch Braid (The Inside-Out French Braid):
This is the reverse of a French braid, where the sections are crossed under the middle instead of over, making the braid pop out from the head.
The Technique: The process is identical to a French braid, but instead of crossing sections over the middle, you cross them under.

Pro Tip: Dutch braids are perfect for creating a halo effect and are the base for many popular festival styles.
Step 2: Leveling Up – Combining Techniques
Once you’ve mastered the big three individually, it’s time to play. Professional braiding is about combination and placement.
The Fishtail Braid: This gorgeous, intricate-looking braid is simpler than it appears. It uses only two sections instead of three. Take a small piece from the outside of one section, cross it over, and add it to the inside of the opposite section. Repeat.
The Waterfall Braid: A beautiful, ethereal technique that creates a cascading effect. It’s a modified French braid where you drop a section of hair instead of incorporating it, picking up new hair to continue the braid.
The 4-Strand & 5-Strand Braids: Adding more strands creates a flatter, more complex-looking weave. This is a fantastic way to challenge your dexterity and understanding of over/under patterns.
Step 3: Creating Intricate Festival Looks
Festival braids are all about creativity, texture, and accessories. They often combine multiple braiding techniques into one head-turning style.
How to Approach a Festival Masterpiece:
Plan Your Design: Is it a braided crown? Two Dutch braids meeting into a bun? A head full of micro-braids? Sketch it out or have a clear picture in mind.
Embrace Texture: Second- or third-day hair, or hair texturized with a sea salt spray, is much easier to braid and holds style better than freshly washed, slippery hair.
Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize! This is where the magic happens.
Threading & Ribbons: Weave colorful threads or thin ribbons into your sections before you start braiding.
Charms and Beads: String small charms or beads onto individual braids.
Fresh Flowers & Vines: For a true boho feel, carefully tangle small sprigs of baby's breath or other hardy flowers into your finished braids.
Combine and Conquer: A typical festival look might use:
A Dutch braid along the hairline to create a crown.
A fishtail braid for the ponytail or bun it leads into.
A few face-framing strands left out to be curled or twisted.
Pro Tips from the Midiff Clinic Floor
Tension is Key: Consistent tension prevents your braid from being loose in some spots and tight in others.
Practice on a Mannequin: It’s your best friend for trying new techniques without the pressure of a live client.
Mistakes are Part of the Process: If a section gets messy, don't be afraid to gently unbraid a few steps and try again. This is how you learn.
Product is Your Friend: A light-hold texturizing spray or pomade can help grip the hair and smooth flyaways, especially on sleek styles.
